Sofia Zadar’s experimental pop compositions construct emancipatory futures, while mixing together spoken word, complex vocal harmonies, organic textures and highly processed electronic sonic structures. As a musician, performer, drag king and multidisciplinary artist based in Bucharest, their aesthetic is rooted in the desires of local queer communities, while lyrically exploring posthumanist and utopian visions through a trauma-informed lens.

In 2021 they released the EP Lyra, an ecofeminist meditation on communities and collective transformations, and in 2023 they returned with Hictopia, a pop odyssey that digs deeper than our systemically imposed ways of performing and links the human body back to its natural rhythms. They are currently working on their first LP, a vast and metamorph album informed by worms, hyphae, neurodivergence and the resilient arts of living on a damaged planet.

Since their first releases in 2020, Sofia Zadar headlined major venues such as Control Club, Kozpont Budapest, Platforma Wolff, Flying Circus Cluj, as well as festivals such as Summer Well (2023), Budapest Showcase Hub (2022), Art200 International Film Festival, and participated in residencies for SHAPE+ & Rokolectiv (2024) and Rezidența21 (2022). They exhibited sound art and video installations as part of gallery group shows such as CONVULSION LTD: Drops on a Hot Plate (2025) and MOVEMENT: Descentralising Utopia (2022). They composed music and performed in a myriad of independent and political theatre projects (TransLucid; GEN ROZ; Papiloma Party; Mirage: A Possible Space and many others), they facilitated sound and performance workshops, they published poems and short stories, articles and hybrid texts. Through their alter ego Toiboy - part drag king, part monster - they embody the complexities of queer and trans existence at the end of the world, having performed in interdisciplinary events such as Transcendent Drag Odyssey (2023), the exhibition Kings & Queens (2023) and Drag District (2024).

Sofia Zadar melds together their immersive and intriguing creativity alongside sophisticated and empathetic storytelling lyricism, creating a listening experience out of this world.

~ What drives me to make music is the need for emancipatory imaginaries and togetherness.  Beyond the anthropocene, our multispecies sensibilities connect sky to ground, past to future, human to non-human. I want to hold space for these intermeshing sensibilities in a way that centers the deep seated needs of my communities as well as our work to world new worlds. ~  (Sofia Zadar)
